  1. Does it hurt to leave the skin in the tan longer than 4 days? No
  2. Can you over tan a skin? No, the skin will only soak up as much tan as it needs. You could put a squirrel in the amount for an elk and it would be fine.
  3. Can I use rock salt or cattle salt? Rock salt-no, cattle salt-Depends, it must be only pure fine grain salt without any additives.
  4. Does the temperature affect the tan? No, but if left in a cold environment, let it stay in the tan longer than normal.
  5. What do I do if my skin is already salted? You must re-hydrate your skin before putting it into Krowtann.
  6. What if I can't get all of my final fleshing done before I go home for the day? Just bag it up in a plastic bag and refrigerate it.
  7. How long has Krowtann been around? It was originally invented over 25 years ago. The original formula has been tweaked a little but is basically the same.
  8. How is Krowtann "Special Whitetail Formula" different than Krowtann 2000? The whitetail formula has more and different oils in it that make big game easier to flesh and gives even better stretch. The 2000 is better at saving any "iffy" skin and seems to work better for small game.
  9. How can I tell if my skin is tanned? It should be white when it is tanned. If there is any pink in the skin besides around a bullet hole than then the skin is not tanned thoroughly.
  10. Can I use baking soda instead of sodium bicarbonate? Yes, baking soda is non-commercial grade sodium bicarbonate. It has finer particles which doesn't neutralize quite as well as the commercial grade sodium bicarbonate. If you use baking soda increase the amount listed on the chart on this website, by 20%.
  11. Can you use the whitetail formula on other species? Yes
  12. Can I re-use a batch after tanning on another skin? No, because your skin has taken out the tanning agent.
  13. Can I put more than one skin in a container? Yes, but you must be very careful to make sure the skins do not get wrapped around each other or that you do not create folds in the skin.
  14. How do I use Krowtann in a pressure tanner? Always use the amounts listed above for the animal and either run for 2 hours, flesh, and then run for another 2 hours or the preferred way is to put it in before quitting for the day and let it run during the night and take it out in the morning.
